lll. Literature as a Platform in Education for Sustainable Development

Sustainable development means “meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs”, as defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development, but its application must be rooted in the context of national realities and aspirations.

The essence of sustainable development is in the harmonious integration of a sound and viable economy, responsible governance, social cohesion/harmony and ecological integrity to ensure that development is a life-enhancing process. The ultimate aim of development is human development now and through future generations.

Literature is a platform in education for sustainable development in such a way that without this we don’t know what are we a Filipino people and what are after knowing all that could make us a real Filipino. In some sense as a Filipino people we ought for our freedom and for our country as well, we are so bless to have our own literature and to show the world that Filipino people have. I can relate literature for education it is because literature is a very important thing need to be cherish by individuals not only we need this for our study but we need this to know where we came from and to know what are we. We can treasure this for us to show and to say the world what we got.

lV. Reflection in Literature

Literature is a word derived from the latin word ‘litera’ which means letter. It is a piece printed word related to the ideas and feelings of the people that maybe true as just a product of the writer’s imagination. I’d learn that meaning of literature when I was handled by Doctor Remedios Dellera.

Every time that our class starts at afternoon, I was nervous in the sense that I was always thinking that our teacher is very strict. But as the class go along I’ve noticed that she only strict in terms of quizzes and examination. She was strict maybe because she was aiming that everybody can pass the subject in the way that everybody studies their lessons well, not in the way that we have to depend to out co-student. Even ma’am is not obviously kind; I know that she is concerned to us in terms of the studies.

During our class in Myth, I’ve learned a lot like the myth of Visayas which is the “Visayan Creation Myth”. In that topic all of us taking note while ma’am is reading the myth because she would gave quiz after reading and lecture. And it was difficult for us because the only thing that we can answer was depending on our copy. But then, we got enough score in that quiz. Then the next topics were legends, riddles, proverbs, and the Ballad song. In the legend, all of us wrote individual legends. Then everybody cited their legends without reading their copy therefore some of our classmates did not participate because they don’t memorized their legends. But some of us participated in this interesting topic. In this topic we’ve learned a lot of different legends of our Philippines culture. Riddles was the next topic, tagalog of this is “Bugtong”. Again all of us individually wrote different riddles. For me this topic was the most interesting. Riddles are not easy to answer without understanding and analyzing. Then the two last topics were proverbs in tagalog “Salawikain” and Ballad Songs.

All in all, our class in literature 111, midterm was good. We learned a lot about Philippine Literature.

V.Integration of Education for Sustainable Development to Literature

Education is the best tool of a person now a day’s especially in his/her daily lives. Education is our wealth that nobody can’t steal. Education towards our literature is one of the important things to know, because this our foundation, origin, and it dealing with our values, moral, ethics of the Filipino’s.

Education is the foundation for sustainable development. It is a key instrument for bringing about changes in values and attitudes, skills, behaviors and lifestyles consistent with sustainable development within and among countries.

The concept of sustainable development includes the key areas of society, environment and economy, with culture as an underlying dimension. The values, diversity, knowledge, languages and worldviews associated with culture influence the way Education for sustainable development is implemented in specific national contexts.
